Why you should work with Sophie Edwards

Sophie is a woman of many talents. She’s a professional vocal coach who specializes in teaching transfeminine folks the arts of voice feminization (although she can and has taught voice masculinization as well). She’s a published author, with her first novel having gone to print in December of 2024. Sophie hosts the YouTube video essay series We Have Always Existed: Transgender Ancient History, which explores the history of transgender people in ancient cultures as familiar as the Roman Empire and other Mediterranean cultures. Sophie even has some hidden talents: she’s a talented SEO marketer and advisor, capable of helping her clients become more findable online, even in the age of AI summaries and LLM-first search.

In this post, I’ll explore some of Sophie’s offerings in more detail. My hope is that by learning more about the things Sophie puts her time and effort into, you’ll be exposed to the sheer volume of work she produces, the creativity and deep research behind the content she creates, and the incredible commitment to the trans community that her practice represents. If at any time you feel yourself wondering if Sophie might be available for any of these talents, the answer is probably yes, and you should feel free to contact Rowan at rowan@lavendermenacetalent.com

She’s a real peach

Whatever she’s doing, Sophie brings humor, grace, empathy, and compassion to her work. She’s as kind as she is wise, and a pleasure to speak with.

Transgender Vocal Coaching and Voice Feminization

An experience common to a lot of transgender individuals as they begin to learn who they are and how they want to express themselves is to experience gender dysphoria around aspects of their body as it currently exists. This is a big reason many people seek out hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and other gender-affirming healthcare. While testosterone can affect the voice of transmasculine folks, deepening the tone and lowering the pitch of their voices, estrogen does not have the reverse effect. While all trans folks may experience dysphoria around their voices, it is transfemmes who often have the most work and practice to do before they achieve voice results they are happy with.

As a trans woman, Sophie has firsthand perspective on the perils of voice dysphoria. She’s also an experienced transgender vocal coach who spends her time helping other trans folks, particularly trans women, learn the mechanics of how the voice is produced, how to control the relevant anatomy in their mouth and throat, and ultimately how to achieve the voice that aligns with their gender expression and feels true to them. While most of Sophie’s practice is voice feminization, she also has experience with and knowledge of voice masculinization, making her perfectly suited for working with trans people of all genders.

While Sophie’s home and practice are based in Ontario, Canada, she is able to take clients from all over the world. She has taught clients in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, and even various spots in Central and South America and Europe! As long as you speak enough English to follow Sophie’s instruction, you should have no trouble working together.

Sophie is now accepting a limited number of vocal coaching clients. If you’re interested, please reach out to Rowan at rowan@lavendermenacetalent.com.

Video Essays and Historical Research

On her YouTube channel, We Have Always Existed: Transgender Ancient History, Sophie digs deep into historical records to find the perhaps surprising presence of transgender individuals throughout history, particularly in the ancient Mediterranean. By exploring the lives, stories, and transitions of these historical figures, Sophie is able to dispel the myth that being transgender is a modern invention of the “woke” left and instead invite her viewers to imagine themselves in the context of their own untaught history.

Through We Have Always Existed, Sophie is connecting trans youth to a lifeline: seeing themselves in history as well as in the present. There were trans priestesses in Ancient Rome. They took a version of HRT to modify their appearance and assuage their gender dysphoria. The idea that transition is a modern invention is completely disproven. Sophie dives into historical records of well-regarded public figures who happened to be trans, and who were not ashamed or ostracised for it, but rather celebrated and venerated.

At the same time, Sophie is herself a living example of a trans woman who’s presently creating a safe space for other trans people in the here and now. Her channel reminds us that trans people have always been here, will always be here, and will not be erased from memory. She is spreading a message of resilience, hope, and belonging in a time when those qualities are very much in high demand.

If you’re a 2SLGBTQIA+ creator, particularly on YouTube or Instagram, and you’re interested in collaborating with Sophie for an episode or even a min-series, please reach out to Rowan at  rowan@lavendermenacetalent.com. Creative and Non-fiction Writing

Sophie is an accomplished writer, having published both a full-length novel and many smaller creative and non-fiction pieces over the years. Her debut novel, The Bottom Line, is described as solarpunk sci-fi, set in near-future Toronto, exploring identity, purpose, automation, and the human cost of obsolescence. Her creative work explores themes of identity, transformation, resistance to injustice, and what the future might look like for a humanity pushed beyond its limits.

Her non-fiction credits include a piece in QT Literary Magazine’s blog detailing why the language we use about trans women matters, and a piece in Litro Magazine about what it’s like to move through the world as a trans woman, and the fear that even a small interaction can instill in us. Through her non-fiction writing, Sophie calls upon the reader to walk a mile in her shoes, to see through her eyes, and to understand and empathize with the person on the other side of this hot-button issue.
