Lavender Menace Talent is excited to announce our newest client: Ashabi Owagboriaye!

Ashabi Owagboriaye (she/they) is a Nigerian-American therapist, artist, and organizer based in Chicago. As a Black, Queer, and Asexual individual, Ashabi brings an intersectional lens to their work, allowing them to intentionally center empathy, cultural awareness, and care throughout their practice. Whether the focus is therapeutic, artistic, or community-based, Ashabi has always been dedicated to creating environments that allow people to be seen, affirmed, and supported in their wholeness.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor [LPC] and National Certified Counselor [NCC], Ashabi works with adults navigating through anxieties that life brings to all of us. Black, IPOC Clients with depression, neurodivergence, difficult family dynamics, and struggles that come from being the first generation born in this country often seek support from her. With a therapeutic framework built from Existential-Humanistic theory, including client-centered & narrative dynamics, Ashabi focuses on more collaborative and compassionate-focused treatments. In this role, Ashabi helps clients reconnect with themselves, providing them with more confidence to rebuild their story and develop a better sense of self. She graduated from Roosevelt University with a Master’s in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling.

Beyond counseling, Ashabi is a multidisciplinary artist who continues creating opportunities for herself to grow and build her craft. As a model/photographer, she’s been able to develop skills from both ends of the camera, strengthening their ability to highlight and capture people's lived experiences from a more intentional and intimate lens. Her ability to photograph authenticity has allowed her to continue engaging in several collaborative projects that expand her artistry and reach.

Ashabi poses in the street during the 2019 Chicago Pride Parade, smiling and waving an asexual pride flag above her head.

Rooted in Pride

In 2019, Ashabi had the privilege of marching in the Chicago Pride Parade alongside countless other members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The same year, Ace In Grace was born to help build on that connection and spread awareness and enthusiasm for asexual and intersecting identities.

In 2019, Ashabi launched Ace in Grace, a digital platform dedicated to educating about asexuality and uplifting Black and POC voices within the community. Through this work, they have been recognized for their leadership and advocacy, including the 2020 Bi+/Queer Activism Award and selection as a 2021 NBCC Minority Fellow. From organizing around Breonna Taylor, co-creating the community march, Pride Without Prejudice, to speaking on panels such as I AM ACE, Ashabi continues to advance visibility, foster dialogue, and advocate for intersectional inclusion through both their professional and creative work.
